Finding a pediatrician

I thought I would open up my blog for suggestions on finding a pediatrician. I've kinda let this slip up on me--let me know who you use and why you love them!!

Did you have a "getting to know you" meeting beforehand and what questions did you ask--or things you wish you would have asked.

I have lots of questions and don't really know where to start.

I use Dr. David Matthews. And we love him. He's very easy to talk to. But I think the biggest reason I like him, is because he doesn't throw antibiotics at everything. He's very aware that they're not always the answer. I HIGHLY recommend him.

We use Dr. Ashodian with Pediatric Associates. We were first with Dr. Matthews and loved him but switched because of the mass amount of kids at the children's clinic. Then we went to Dr. Harvey and loved him, but he moved. We are so happy with Dr. Ashodian. He is so friendly, acts like he has tons of time for you, very good with kids probably because he has 2 children at home - I believe they are 2 and 5 - something like that. Sorry I wrote so much, but I do have strong feelings on this subject. I also like Pediatric Associates because they have a sick waiting room and a well child waiting room. I love these suggestion questions!

We too use Dr. Ashodian. I had asked Dr. Edwards if he knew anything about him during a pregnancy visit and he said he couldn't recommend anyone over another, but when I said I was thinking of using Ashodian he said, "Oh, Steve is great. I like him a lot!" I knew we had made the right choice when he (Ashodian) changed one of Theron's first meconium diapers (you have this to look forward to) at the hospital. A doctor who will change a newborn's diaper is a keeper! (Sophie Bryant also recommended him & Nikki uses him now too).

We use Ashodian, too, and we think that he is great! He is very easy to talk to, and I do appreciate the separate waiting rooms. We set up a "getting to know you" visit with Dr. Harvey before we had Carter, and it was really helpful. I am sure that Pediatric Associates and the Children's Clinic would do the same thing. When we went for that visit we asked questions about their sick call hours, how quickly we can expect a response from a message and what kind of wait times they experience, and how that Dr. feels about antibiotics or anything else that you feel strongly about. I hope this helps!

I use Dr. Rouse and really love him but my advice to you would be steer clear of the Children's Clinic. It is always a mad house, especially in the winter. Sometimes it is even hard to get in. If I didn't have a great personal relationship with Dr. Rouse I wouldn't be there. Dr. Matthews is great too! Rouse will get me in anytime and I always see him!

I also love Amy Duch, who used to be at the Children's Clinic, but is now in with Ashodian, I think. She is awesome!

We use Dr. Jane Sneed at the children's clinic. One of my favorite things about her is that she is a mom and understands things from a mom's perspective. She also is not quick to medicate unneccesarily. She spends time with you, answers any and all questions, does not rush. Talks to my girls on a personal level. She really likes her job and it shows. We have had access to talk to her after business hours instead of an answering service.

We use Hornbeck at Pediatric Associates. He was one of the two founding Drs for the clinic. I did not do a sit down meeting with him, but I had friends already using him and had actually been to his office with her a couple of times. We love Dr. H! He is very good about answering all of my questions, staying in the room with me for as long as I want and even just discussing things with me about how he feels about hot button topics such as vaccines and autism. We now have a large number of kids at church that see Hornbeck. Oh also, one thing that I love about Dr. H. is that he beleives in mother's intuition as much as medicine. I've taken Samuel in with basically no symptoms and said I thought he had an ear infection and I was right. He always says, "Well, the APA says this or that, but every mother will tell you better."

We have also seen Ashodian a couple times when Horbeck was out and I liked him too. We've also seen Amy and like her. I have a couple friends that see Reinhard and like him, me not so much. He's much more cut and dry, but that appeals to people.

One other thing, I've never called with a sick child and not gotten in that day. They will always work you in with someone as quickly as possible. And sick call in the morning is pretty easy too.
